Canapé menu
Two-bite food passed by servers, designed to be eaten standing with a drink in the other hand. Choose six to ten canapés from the lists below and we will balance hot, cold, vegetarian and sweet.
How many canapés per guest
Count pieces per guest, not varieties. The right number depends on how long the reception runs and whether a meal follows.
| Situation | Pieces per guest | Varieties |
|---|---|---|
| Before a seated dinner, 45–60 minutes | 4–6 | 4–5 |
| Reception, 2 hours, dinner later | 8–12 | 6–8 |
| Cocktail party that replaces dinner, 3 hours | 14–18, including 2–3 more substantial bites | 8–10 |
| Evening event starting after 7:00 p.m., guests have eaten | 6–8 | 5–6 |
Guests eat the most in the first 45 minutes, so we send out about half the total pieces in that window and slow down after. If a grazing table or station runs alongside, reduce passed pieces by roughly a third.
Balancing the selection
For a mixed Toronto guest list, a good starting balance is about 40% vegetarian or vegan, at least two halal-sourced meat options, at least two gluten-free options, and one or two sweet bites at the end. Seafood is popular but should not be more than a quarter of the list, because shellfish allergies are common and those guests will skip every seafood tray.
Servers announce each canapé and its main allergens as they offer it. For guests with serious allergies, we can plate a separate set in the kitchen and bring it to them directly.
Service style and staffing
Canapés are a full-service format: they are finished on site and passed within minutes, so crisp things stay crisp. As a planning guide, allow one passing server for every 20–25 guests, plus one or two kitchen staff to finish and plate. A reception of 120 usually needs five or six servers passing and two people in the kitchen.
The kitchen can be small. In a condo party room, a gallery back room or an office pantry, we bring portable ovens and need a table, a nearby outlet and a place to wash hands. Tell us early what the venue has; the full-service page explains what we bring.
What's included
The per-person price covers the food, garnishes, serving trays and cocktail napkins. Service staff are billed by the hour at the staff rate, and full-service events carry a service charge; both are shown on the pricing page. Glassware, bar service and rentals are quoted separately. Canapé receptions start at 40 guests.
Questions
About this menu
How many canapés do I need for 100 guests?
For a two-hour reception with dinner later, plan 800–1,200 pieces across six to eight varieties. If the canapés replace dinner, plan 1,400–1,800 pieces.
Can canapés replace a full meal?
Yes, for a three-hour cocktail party, if you plan 14–18 pieces per guest and include two or three more substantial bites (skewers, short rib, arancini). Many hosts add a station for the same reason.
Do you need a kitchen at the venue?
No full kitchen is needed. We bring portable ovens and need a work table, power and a handwashing setup. Tell us what the venue has when you book.
How many servers do I need for passed canapés?
As a planning guide, one passing server per 20–25 guests, plus kitchen staff to finish and plate.
Can the whole canapé menu be halal or vegetarian?
Yes. Choose from the halal-coded and vegetarian items and leave out seafood and dishes with non-halal ingredients. See halal catering for how we confirm requirements.
