Catering in Markham

Markham is one of Canada's largest technology hubs, and most of our Markham planning starts with a campus: badge access, a large atrium, and a team of 50 to 500 that needs to be fed on a schedule. Evenings and weekends bring family celebrations in Unionville, Cornell and Cathedraltown.

Catering for Markham's tech corridor

The City of Markham's economic development office reports more than 1,500 technology and life sciences companies employing over 35,000 people, concentrated along Highway 404, Highway 7 and the 407. Many are Canadian head offices or research and development sites for global firms, with semiconductor, software, fintech and insurance teams working in large campus-style buildings.

Tech offices order differently from law firms downtown. The groups are bigger, the dress code is casual, the schedule is tied to release cycles and global meetings, and many employees have dietary preferences they expect to be taken seriously. The common requests:

  • All-hands and town hall lunches for 100–400 people, where food must be served fast so the meeting starts on time. Multiple buffet lines or pre-packed boxed lunches work best.
  • Recurring team lunches, weekly or daily for a floor, which fit a recurring meal program with a rotating menu.
  • Hackathons and release nights that run into the evening, where we plan a substantial dinner, late snacks and coffee rather than pizza at 9 p.m.
  • Product launches and customer events, usually with canapés and a standing reception in the lobby or atrium.
  • Early-morning and evening meetings with teams in Asia or Europe, which need breakfast at 7 a.m. or dinner at 7 p.m.

Campus logistics

Large Markham campuses bring their own rules. Before the first order we ask for:

  • Delivery and visitor access. Many sites require visitor registration in advance, a badge at the front desk, or deliveries through a shipping and receiving door at the back of the building.
  • The room and route. An atrium event may require setup before staff arrive, with a quiet pack-out after. A lab building may restrict food to certain floors.
  • On-site food-service contracts. Some campuses have a cafeteria operator with exclusive rights for certain spaces. Check with facilities before booking outside catering for an event.
  • Purchasing. Enterprise clients often need a purchase order number, a vendor registration form and invoice details before the first delivery. Allow time for this.

For all-hands events we plan one buffet line per 75–100 guests, or a grab-and-go table of labelled boxes, so the room is fed in about 15 minutes.

Dietary labels matter more in big teams

In a 300-person company, even small percentages add up: dozens of vegetarians, halal eaters and people avoiding pork or beef, plus a handful with allergies. The 2021 Census found that 82.1% of Markham residents identify as visible minorities, with Chinese and South Asian communities the largest, and workplaces reflect that diversity. For large events we label every item with dietary tags and main ingredients, place vegan and halal options at the start of the line so they do not run out, and hold back a small reserve of special meals for late arrivals.

Seasonal and cultural celebrations

Markham's workplaces and families celebrate a full calendar. Lunar New Year events in January or February, the Mid-Autumn Festival in September, Diwali in October or November, and December holiday parties all generate office celebrations where the goal is to include everyone, not just to serve a themed menu. Our suggestion is to combine a shared menu everyone can eat with one or two festive items, then add traditional sweets from a specialist bakery if the team wants them. Our holiday party catering page covers timing and format.

Family celebrations follow the same calendar at home. Many Markham families hold large banquet dinners at restaurants; catering at home fits better for 30–80 guests, open-house style gatherings and milestone birthdays.

Unionville, Markham Village and home events

Historic Main Street Unionville and Markham Village have heritage buildings, event spaces and older houses; newer neighbourhoods like Cornell, Cathedraltown and Berczy Village have townhouses and detached houses with smaller yards. For home events we ask about street parking, which is limited on many newer streets with narrow lots, and whether guests will be inside or in the garden. See catering in private homes and our office catering guide.

Travel and pricing

Highway 404 is congested southbound in the morning and northbound in the afternoon, and the 401 and 404 interchange backs up quickly. Highway 407 is faster but tolled. For lunch deliveries to a Markham campus we leave early enough to absorb a slowdown at the 401.

Boxed lunches start from $24 per person, hot lunches from $32, breakfast from $16 and canapé receptions from $38, before HST. Delivery is $45. See pricing.

Nearby: Richmond Hill, Scarborough and North York. Services: corporate catering, weddings, private events.

Start vendor setup early

Large Markham employers often need vendor registration, a purchase order and visitor access before the first delivery. Starting that paperwork a week or two ahead avoids a missed first order.
