Catering in Scarborough

Scarborough's catering is shaped by big family celebrations, faith and community halls, and workplaces that run on shifts. Menus here are more likely to need halal, vegetarian and no-beef options side by side, clearly labelled.

Who we cater for in Scarborough

Scarborough is one of the most diverse parts of Toronto. The City's 2021 census ward profile for Scarborough-Agincourt reports Chinese as the largest ethnic origin there, at about a third of residents, and Scarborough has long been a home for Tamil, Filipino, Caribbean, South Asian and Muslim communities. That diversity shows up directly in catering requests: a single birthday or community dinner often needs halal meat, a fully vegetarian table and dishes without beef or pork, all served from the same buffet line.

The events are mostly family- and community-led: milestone birthdays and anniversaries, graduation parties, engagement parties, memorial gatherings, fundraising dinners, and religious holidays celebrated with neighbours and co-workers.

Halls, places of worship and community centres

Many Scarborough celebrations take place in banquet halls, mosque, temple and church halls, and community centres. These buildings vary more than any other venue type:

  • Some have a commercial kitchen that outside caterers may use; others only allow food to be brought in hot and served.
  • Many places of worship have rules about what food may enter the building, for example no pork, no beef, or no meat at all, and some ask that food be prepared separately. Get these rules from the hall committee in writing before we plan the menu.
  • Halls often set strict end times for clean-up, with deposits held against the kitchen and floor.
  • Parking lots fill quickly on weekend evenings, so we ask for a reserved spot near the kitchen door for unloading.

For large buffets we plan the line so vegetarian dishes come first with their own serving utensils, halal meat dishes are clearly labelled, and servers can explain each dish. Our guide to catering in community halls covers buffet flow for 150 guests and more.

Halal and vegetarian done properly

For many Scarborough families, halal is not a preference on a checklist. Some guests accept meat from any halal supplier; others follow a specific certifying body, such as the Halal Monitoring Authority, which is based in Scarborough and follows a hand-slaughtered zabiha standard. Tell us which standard your guests expect and we will confirm in writing what we can meet. Read more on our halal catering page.

Vegetarian guests need the same care: separate utensils on the buffet, no shared fryer oil where it matters, and clear labels. Some guests avoid onion and garlic, or eggs, for religious reasons, so ask your family about this before the menu is final. Our vegan and plant-based catering page shows the dishes we build full menus around.

Iftar and holiday catering

During Ramadan, workplaces, schools and community groups across Scarborough host iftar dinners. The whole event hinges on sunset, which in Toronto shifts by one to two minutes a day. Dates, water and a light starter need to be on the table the moment the fast ends, with the main buffet ready 15–20 minutes later, after prayer. We plan setup backwards from the sunset time on your date and bring food hot for that exact window.

Diwali, Lunar New Year, Christmas and Eid gatherings follow in their seasons. Because these dates move, book as early as you can: the most popular weekend evenings fill first.

Workplaces that run on shifts

Scarborough's employment areas, along Progress Avenue, Markham Road, Milner Avenue and the 401 corridor, include manufacturing plants, warehouses and distribution centres. Feeding a shift-based workforce is different from an office lunch:

  • Staff appreciation lunches may need to serve day, afternoon and night shifts, so we split the order into timed drops or individually packed boxed lunches that can be refrigerated for later shifts.
  • Break rooms often have limited seating and a short 30-minute break, so the food must be fast to serve and easy to eat.
  • Many sites require visitors to sign in at security, wear safety vests on the floor, or deliver only to the front office. Share the site rules and we will follow them.

Offices around Scarborough Town Centre, the Civic Centre and the college and university campuses order more conventional meeting and breakfast catering.

Getting to Scarborough

The 401 through Scarborough is heavily congested from the Don Valley Parkway to Morningside at rush hour, and the collector lanes near Kennedy and McCowan slow quickly after a collision. Line 3 Scarborough closed in 2023, and the Line 2 subway extension is not expected to open until the 2030s, so guests without cars depend on buses; Line 5 Eglinton, which opened in 2026, ends at Kennedy station. If many guests arrive by transit, allow for late arrivals and keep the buffet warm longer.

Prices start from $32 per person for hot buffets and from $68 for celebration buffets, before HST, with delivery at $45. See pricing or nearby areas: Markham, North York and midtown Toronto. All services: corporate, weddings, private events.

Ask the hall for its food rules in writing

Places of worship and community halls often restrict certain meats or require separate preparation. Get the rules from the hall before we write the menu, so nothing is turned away at the door.
